Yesterday I was at a friends computer who runs a DUTCH version of photoshop 7. When i tried to execute an action created on my pc, running an english (US) Photoshop, i got some errors. As the action tried to change layers it said: 'cannot find layer1' Turns out that, unlike for example M$ Office products (excel, Access, etc), Photoshop handles purely on a name (or text) base. If you'd make a formula in (DUTCH) excel stating 'ALS(b1<B2,b3=1,b3=0)' and you take this worksheet into an english version it'd be automatically read : 'IF(b1<B2,b3=1,b3=0)' (ALS is IF in dutch).

A dutch version creates a 'laag' as opposed to a 'layer', 'layer copy' is 'laag kopie'

So how do I get these 'english' actions to work on a dutch photoshop?
Are there any action editors and/or translators ?

As far as i'm aware there isn't any way to do this. I've never heard of anyone creating an app that would aid in resolving this issue, and have to date never heard of this being possible.

Perhaps a trip over to Adobe's PS Forum is in order... since their tech guys hang out there and can answer this question without any doubt.

Update:

I dumped my actions to a textfile (using Ctrl Alt Save actions).
very interesting results..
When you make a new layer and rename it like say Temp Layer, this name is used by the action and you have no problems.
If you're sloppy like me and let PS just use it's defaults (layer 1, layer 1 copy etc.) you run into trouble on a 'foreign' system..

example:

Duplicate Background
Set current layer
To: layer
Name: ?Background kopie?
later on:
Select layer ?Background kopie?

as opposed to
Duplicate current layer
....
Select layer ?Layer 1 copy?


Conclusion: If you want your actions to work on in PS versions other then your 'native' one, you have to rename each layer as you copy or create it..

There are also English to Dutch/Dutch to English online free translators. Just paste the text into the text box, hit Translate, the English version will be provided.
You can then read abd follow the action, recording it as you go.

It is often a problem caused by the use of a non-English keyboard.

When you have more than one language installed in Win, by default it takes the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Alt to change between keyboard settings. For some things, like drawing a circle from the centre, you need this shortcut inside PS also. This results in Win changing from, say, French Azerty or whatever, to American Qwerty. Result: some shortcuts don't work anymore or give bizarre results like Ctrl+Z becoming Ctrl+W. You want to undo your last action, and you get a dialog asking you if you want to save before closing. Selecting all becomes quitting etc etc etc.

Another frustrating thing with non_English keyboards is that you cannot use rectangular brackets to change the size of your brush as these are AltGr options to the keys.
But when you set your keyboard to Am. qwerty, undoing means, once again, quitting etc etc etc.
