Photoshopping Terragen created images? Post #1 | | Guest | Photoshopping Terragen created images?
Sort of a pointless topic, maybe, but I'm curious none-the-less. Has anyone out there used Photoshop to make a Terragen created scenic image look even better? And, if so, what did you do? I'm at a loss for ways to tweak my scenic images to look even more.. well.. scenic, and realistic. heh.

I haven't, yet I looked at a lot of, often very beautiful, works created with Terragen;
What is often lacking is atmosphere. Dirt. Detail. Imperfections. Nature's Chaos. Life. Oxygen, Hydrogen, in short: air.
Also, the colours are mostly a bit too saturated. Proof: it is much more difficult to discern a digital black and white from a natural one.
And the landscapes are often very spectacular while the pics are pure perfection. And that is not from this earth.
Photoshop tools: masks, layer masks, noise, grain, clouds, even more masks. And a lot of painting on the masks.

~nods.. nods~ Yes, that is quite true. Terragen rendered images do look way to perfect to honestly be realistic. I'll have to give that a try later, see what I can come up with. heh.

As soon as I have the time, I want to dive into Terragen. I do believe it is a very good app, and with what I saw lately, it'll be difficult to get better landscapes.
Otoh: that "realism" is also a problem for Poser and even very sophisticated software.
I personally don't mind when the realsim isn't perfect: I consider the impact of the work to be of far more importance.
But I'd say that to add realism is mainly a question of terrain maps. The more detailed, the better.

I dont realy think that you have to work with Photoshop after you created image in Terragen. There is nothing much to do with that, atleast you want to correct unpropper Shadows and Highlighted areas.
Here is one example: http://www.photoshopgurus.info/forum...pic.php?t=4942
Compare the picture on the Top, with the picture on the bottom. Sometimes many of the textures does not properly reflecting the light and than you have to work with Burn and Dodge tools. Sometimes you can even work with Repalcing tool and different Brushes to correct Sky effect or any other.

You can also easily make global adjustments to a Terragen image, without messing things up. I agree, if you want to do more complicated stuff, then you have to be careful, but that doesn't mean that one shouldn't use Photoshop. Photoshop doesn't make the wrong corrections, only the artist does.
You also have to understand the importance of an image. You might make the most realistic mountains in Terragen, but does that make your image a winner?
I totally agree with Erik who spoke the wise words: "I consider the impact of the work to be of far more importance." [righton]

... [honesty] John you have the right point, programms are tools and we have to use them all to get better results. But, There is nothing much you can do with Terragen in Photoshop. I can use Terragen in Terranium or 3D Studio MAX integration. ... but, There is nothing much you can do with it in photoshop.
Good Luck

Several of the best ranked Terragen images were modified or adjusted in Photoshop. The greatest example of what Photoshop can do for your 3D images is one of the best Vue d'Esprit artists called Kenwas, who takes his images to another level by using Photoshop; http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.e...&Artist=kenwas
Again, it's all depends an what your intentions are with your art. If you seek super realistic images, then one might think to focus mainly on 3D, but I think you have a problem to understand that this isn't what most people are after and that's also the reason why we have so many different art forms.
Also try to explain to me, how millions of people use Photoshop with great succes for the most realistic art one can think of (photography) and why we can't use Photoshop for Terragen? \:]
