I am very new to photoshop...

I can take a photo and emboss it. Then what i'd really like to do is color it without losing the 3D effect of the emboss style (Or whatever :-))

How do i do it?

Thank you in advance,

newbie

Welcome!

Just add a new layer and set its blending mode to color.
Now start painting on this layer. Have fun!

Hi newbie,

John1 was exactly right about the coloring but I thought to add a bit more as you said you weren't too familiar with layers.

When you first open a photo it becomes a Background Layer. A background layer must be opaque so the easiest way to emboss it, being the use of Styles, wouldn't work because using Styles requires transparency. So open your image and do one of two things. In the Layers Palette, either duplicate the image by dragging it to the little New Layer icon at the bottom of the palette (next to the trash can) or you can double click on the image (which is background layer) and when the properties window appears, click OK. Your layer will now be named Layer 0 and support transparency. Now double click on the layer you wish to use for the emboss and a Styles window comes up which provides you with Bevel and Emboss available as well as a zillion other options.

Once you have created your emboss effect, then do what John1 suggested, click the New Layer button at the bottom of the layers palette, change the blend mode and have at it with the brushes.

Cheers!
