Default 3D halo

Can anyone help me in making a 3D halo? something like, on a black background, its in the shape of sort of a short, fat oval, and it looks sorta like round metal, i hope you all know what i'm talking about, because its 3am, lol.. you know if you were looking at a ring from straight above, it would be a circle, then if you were to sit it on a table, and look at it from an angle, ti would be a short, fat, oval, right? thats what I want this halo to look like, but with somewhat of a heavenly glow to it... can anyone write me a quick tute on this? thanks...

Too simple jinx...

Create an oval selection.
EDIT>Stroke by 1 pixel, with white.
Deselect.
Apply the Layer Style filter "Outer Glow" to the oval outline, and set it to be the size/colour you want.

Try that.

Default 3D halo

Rings - I used two rings in my example, each one on a separate layer; a dark blue and light blue one.
I slightly shifted one layer (that I turned into a clipping layer first) to get the 3D effect.

Halo - I merged the two layers, added a slight inner shadow, made a copy and blurred it a few times.
I used a mask on this blurred layer to remove the blur on the ring itself, closest to the viewer.

Shadow - The shadow is created by another copy of the ring, filled with black, stretched, blurred and a mask with alinear b/w gradient was added to make the shadow softer on one side.

Finsihing touch - I added a background, merged all layers, copied the result to a new layer and sharpened it. Then I added a mask to this layer and with a soft black brush I painted on the mask to remove some sharpness from the background.

I don't know if this is what you want, since you mentioned something about a 3D (?) halo,
but maybe it helps you to come up with some ideas of your own.

Don't try to follow the exact steps in my example, it's just to give you some global idea, since I left out several tricks that would make this a huge tutorial and that's not what I had in mind.

Can someone please explain what he means by the whole "nudging of 2 rings" and clipping layer, and stuff? please? I can't seem to get an effect even close to that...

I think what John1 is refering to is "grouping".

Try this. Make a ring the size of the halo you want. Color it a darker color. Now duplicate that ring, and change it's color to a ligher color. Choose the move tool and click the up arrow key on the board a couple times to nudge the ligher ring up a few pixels. Now gaussian blur the lighter ring a couple pixels. With the ligher ring layer still selected, hit cmd+G (ctrl+G) to group the two layers together. The transparency of the bottom layer hides anything outside of it's boundaries. So what you end up with is just the glow on the inside.

Hopefully that'll get you movin'. Have fun.

Mindbender, you kill me!

Every time you post something, the image is fantastic!!! You couldn't just do a halo. You had to double it AND throw in a glass orb.

I always look forward to seeing your postings.
