one thing, though... everytime I make an oval selection, and stroke it, I've got flat edges (like in the example below) ... why?

EDIT: Well, I worked with what I had, and came up with this... not the best quality, but i'll play with it, and see what I come up with. Thanks guys! (I'm not the best with backgrounds, as you can probably tell [honesty] )

You've discovered one of the problems with selections. A similar issue is expanding a selection tends to flatten curves. The way around it is to use the Elipse tool, one of the vector tools next to the Pen Tool in the Tool Box. Set the tool options (in the options bar) to Paths and stroke the path with a brush (from the icon at the bottom of the Path Palette) after setting up your brush size and shape.
