I want to make an rectangle (i.e. white), and I want it to have black edges. How do I do that? I know how to color a retangle, how do I make the edges?
In Photoshop there are a few different ways to do this. Create your rectangle by using the rectangular marquee and filling (Edit > Fill) is one. The border you desire is actually called a stroke. With the marquee still active use Edit > Stroke... and a dialog will come up which allows you to select the width of the stroke in pixels and whether it is drawn inside, centered on, or outside the marquee. If you keep it inside the corners stay sharp. If you place it outside the corners tend to round off somewhat.
Good one, Lily! I remembered we had a couple of posts recently but couldn't find them instantly. Your description shows the two most common techniques. A third would be to use a rectangle shape and use a stroked layer style. Can you think of any more?
Press D to set to default colours,j then grab your pencil tool and draw it using the shift key to constrain to straight lines.
For exact sizes and placements, you can draw guides.
That was very clever! Even with your picture it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what you did! I'd never thought of using the gradient tool like that, though I've made many gradients with series of transparent 'bands.' I am curious how you drew the gradient image. Did you use the Linear gradient and draw all four sides or try the Diamond gradient and use one motion at 45??
