Well... it is in fact clear enough for the appropriate user level, which is intermediate. I'm not trying to be funny, just making sure you understand that that tute assumes the user has at least an intermediate level understanding of Photoshop.
And in fact, you're the first person to have this kind of problem.
Without knowing the exact steps you've done, the problem appears to be one of 3 things... as though you have a selection going when applying the HUE&SAT filter, or you've grouped (clipped) 2 layers together that shouldn't be grouped, or you're on the wrong layer when applying the HUE&SAT filter. Make sure you've clicked on (activated) the layer containing the top surface of the numbers before using the HUE&SAT filter.
Can you be more specific as to which step you were on when things started going wrong?
