Ziggy,

As far as I know render isn't a term associated with Photoshop functions. You see the term used in 3D programs and printers (which can be sent vector data and it renders the math to paper or film.) In PS, Layer > Rasterize > Type takes vector type data layers and turns it into bitmap (pixel) data. Is that what you were meaning?

Even though it will obviously take more space on the drive, When I want to do something that requires rasterizing the type, That's when I duplicate the file I'm working on and save what I've done to that point. That way if I don't like it and don't feel like going into the history, I can just pull up the file fromt aht point. Maybe not the best way to go about things, but it's my way.

Default render or rasterize

I think that "render" was the terminology used in the past to rasterize a text layer... photoshop 6, maybe?

The operation is similar to "create layers" to rasterize layer styles...
