Default Making a submerged in water effect?

I am going to make a image of a lady, her pupils will be taken out (I'll use the stamp tool to make the colored part of the eye replace the pupil)... and her eyes will be burned. I may put a crackling effect on her, I am not sure. What I am sure of is I want to get an effect going so it looks like she is underwater. This needs to look very realistic... I haven't seen any tutorials for making things look underwater. Its ok for it to have very light ripple waves... But i dont want a ripple like the one under the distort filter.. all I really want to do is know how to make something appear to be submerged in water. Any suggestions? I have tried many various things.. but none worked.

Edit:
Have any of you seen the lord of the rings two? (well of coarse you have) (no.. not three... two ) Remember when those bodies are floating underwater.. just under the surface of the water? That's exactly what I want it to be like. And I might possible in the distance have a bright flash of light with a emty rowboat heading towards it.

My intentions are not to make it gothic.. if it ends out gothic.. then I'll get rid of it. I'm trying to base it on one of my favorite band's songs.

The song goes like this:
______________________________
RADIOHEAD - Pyramid Song
______________________________

i jumped in the river and what did I see?
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

i jumped in the river
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
_______________________________________

It's not a bad song... it wouldn't hurt to even download it off of a site and listen to it to just hear what it's like to interpret what the meaning of this piece is and what it's going to look like (or what it should look like). Then you could delete the song... you know.. just so you dont have to buy thier whole cd to listen to one little song wink Big Grin Oh Well

So dont get me wrong... I'm not trying to make it gothic, and I am not trying to incoarage mp3 sharing programs [bustagut] [bustagut] [bustagut]

Oh, almost forgot to mention.. lol. I'm also going to try to get stars and a moon to reflect off of the water. I know how to do all of that... I just need to know how to submerge stuff in water

Default Making a submerged in water effect?

No wonder you kids today are in a mess. Why don't you listen to Elvis or Hermans Hermits?...........Just kidding, don't go off on me now!

I know that scene and that is amazingly haunting . Your figures would have some kind of watery greenish cast to it. You would use masks to fade the face in and out. The water was still in those scenes so water ripples would be kept to a minimum. You might use closeups of earth and grass to bring contrast to the water - just in a corner or small part of the pic. Thats a striking scene so there are reproductions of it - I would study them and work on getting it right through trial and error.
Probably not easy but would be impressive if you can do it. Look forward to seeing what you come up with [righton] Ferlin

Great ideas Ferlin

Try a green like normal sea/ grimywater etc like its being lit from a nice day, then add some over cast sky to the whole thing by adding some mid grey mixed with a bit of dark blue in patches.Next try an adj layer and reduce the light amount further.

Under the water everything will probably take on a swirly type effect due to the ripples of the water above.

Also use some gradient to show some light falloff Alistair

I might have a go at this actually if you dont mind Alistair

Argh, copier... get your own ideas!!! (And I got the idea from a movie... that I didn't make... [bustagut] ) Sure, go ahead stu... we could compare results. Hey, does anyone have any reference pic that i can use from the real scene of the 2nd lotr movie? I just need to use a couple reference pics just to see what it looks like, how everything is spread, etc. etc. I'll have myself a look now to see if I can't find any pics. I doubt I'll find any [honesty]

I dont quite like it yet. What does it need? I'm not sure I had the face submerged but it didn't look good.

Default Making a submerged in water effect?

Ooh this a tough one Alistair, heres why.

First set your time of day.

next your light angle or Sun position.

Next the color of your water.

Surface tension on the water,so you have to work out what area is sticking out of the water and how the water wraps around it creating tension in the area ripples etc.

Then paint your base colors and use color fills with different blend modes to create contrast giving you the effect of light bleed.

Next is detail clouds and sky etc are what gives water color as its basically color less,so the water color will be a combo of the sky color and the depth of the water and what is in it.

Next is details and caustics.

Hope some of that helps,is not repeat not meant to scare you off though ok ,stick at it you will get it.

In LOTR they used models and put them in pools of water after they had been incredibly well painted though. After that they used Shake {a high end comping program for ani} and added color and effect etc.

There is a piece on the two towers on the extended version DVD on how they did that piece Alistair.

Heres an airbrushed piece of water I made earlier.

ahh, wat am i kidding.. this piece is crap. I made fog over the water.. there was origionally blue water with beutiful reflective clouds.. but it was to bright.. as i observed in lotr there wasnt much cloud reflection. This piece is ganna be really hard from here on if I want to continue. I bet you it's ganna give me a hard time.
