of course he can play a holding role, the only reason he doesnt is coz of his versatility at liverpool so hes on the right, and he gets pushed to the right for england coz mcclaren is blind and picks the name instead of the players abilities

No...the reason he doesnt is because he isnt a holding mid for one and second is that Liverpool have Alonso, Momo and now Mascherano. So it leaves SG to play on the right.

And if you saying that McClaren picks players by name (im guessing you mean lampard) then seriously take your head out from your backside because Lamps deserves to be playing for England on ability. Dont believe me? go check the lads performances over the last 3-4 seasons thats all the proof you need.

As they say...Form is temporary, Class is permanent.

He mighten be it top form atm but he still is one of Englands best midfielders and one that good enough to have teams like Barca interested in him.
