How would I turn a image with lets say 20 colours, into a 3 color image? Im makinfg a shirt, should it be in cmyk? And someone told me to use the curves option to make it 1-3 colours. Have any ideas?

Do you need control of the three(3) colors?
Have you tried first converting the image into grayscale then go back and convert it into Duotone then using the TYPE:pull down menu you can set it to use tritone or quadtone if you want.

I have no clue what you just said [stuned] lol. But i hear that even in greyscale there is more than 3 colours, which boggles my mind.. i thought it was jus shades of grey! Am I wrong?

I think you're referring to the 256 shades of grey, unless you call black and white a colour ...

Not knowing what your source image is I can't vouch for how useful this will be, but have you tried making an adjustment using threshold where you can define the number of colours the image is presented in....

Alistair: In order to activate the DUOTONE,TRITONE,QUADTONE you must first convert your image to GRAYSCALE.

Image>Mode>Grayscale (Discard color information)
Then
Image>Mode (Now Duotone is activated) Duotone.

Within the Duotone dialog panel you can pick the colors to use and howmany 1~4.

I'm not sure if that's what your trying to do [confused]

greyscale is just that, greyscale. It occupies no color space. If you greyscale an image and then convert it to rgb or cmyk then you can add color to it. If that image then prints as cmyk ( press ) then it will separate as cmyk when ripped. If it is to be used with spot color then go to a duotone mode. (or whatever) But as greyscale there is no color.
