Default Detached colors palette?? Plus two other probs

I hope someone can help me with this, as it is very irritating. I have no idea what I did, but my colors palette is detached from the swatches and styles palettes, and I can't figure out how to get it back in there.

Second problem is I've got two little icon looking things stuck to the upper left hand corner of every new file I start. One is a little grey box with "01" in it, the other one is also grey, but looks like it has a funky lookin "M" in it, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it.

Third problem (yes, I'm just full of them today, lol) is that every new file seems to be partially locked! And I don't want them locked at all. Again, I have no idea what the heck I did, or how to fix it. I looked through all 5 viewable pages of this tech board, and couldn't find anything about it, so I hope this isn't a repost.

WooHooooooo! Nevermind about the colors palette, I got it back where it belongs, lol. I had tried dragging the colors palette to the swatches and styles tabs, but it just put the colors palette right on top of it in a separate window. So, I just clicked and dragged it around the area real slow and paid attention to the highlighting that occured. When I saw that the bar just above the tabs highlighted, I unclicked the colors and it worked! (btw, I decided to type that out, not because you guys don't know how, but so that if someone else comes looking for the same info, it will be here )

Thank you in advance for help on the other two problems!

Glad you got your palette dilemma sorted there Karma

The numbers that are showing up sound like slices to me,so go to the top menu and browse down the "Veiw" heading and to the "Show" sub menu you should see slices,if it has a checkmark or tick besides it,it means slices visible,to disable it just reselect over slices once more and it will do a runner.

All PS docs open with a locked background layer. To un lock a background layer just double click it or opt/alt{think its alt/opt click I have a crap memory} click it and it will become a new editable layer....

You can re-"dock" your palettes back together. Just grab one and drag it back in to the other. Takes a little practice, but it can be done.

Hiya Karma, welcome to the fun house.
Hope this may be of use for palette docking.

Drag a palette by the *Tab* either onto the middle or bottom of the *target *palette.
You will see a black highlighter frame on the target.
Drop on arrival at required destination.

Picture explains more clearly.

Don't forget one of my favorites: Click and drag the tab into the "palette well" (the little grey box at the right hand side of the info bar at the top of the screen in version 6+) This will put palettes out of the way, they then work kind of like a menu popping open when you click them. Great for larger palettes like the file browser, brushes, history, etc. that you don't use actively, but want to have available all the time in a larger format. They don't encroach on the space of the other palettes this way either, so they can be as big as your screen allows without shoving the other palettes out of the way in your layout.

Also, don't forget that with 7.0 you started being able to save locations of palettes. This allows for multiple configurations and/or users to be remembered and popped back into place at the click of a menu option. I use this a lot when switching from design which requires lots of palettes to photo resotration which requires fewer but things like layers have to be huge. Makes life much easier

Thank you again, everybody. I like how you guys explain things in detail and give full pertinent information. It's something you don't see too often these days.

I noticed that, and I think I like it. It would take a little getting used to, but it sure does make the whole work area look a bit less cluttered.
