Photoshop's Texture Filter; Pixels vs Inches.

When I create a new image in Photoshop 7, for example 500x500 pixels, I can use Photoshop's texture filter and select Sandstone and it will create a nice realistic Sandstone texture.

However, if I create a new image using inches and then try to make a Sandstone texture it will just look like a colored background with noise. If I increase it to 100% it looks like Sandstone, however, if I print it it will not. [doh]

Can anyone explain why? [stuned]

Resolution differences. Example:

500px x 500px at 300 dpi is 500 pixels across and 500 pixels down.

500px x 500px at 72 dpi is 500 pixels across and 500 pixels down.

In this case you are always dealing the exact same number of pixels so the texture, which is a set number of pixels, always displays the same.

5in x 5 in at 300 dpi is 1500 pixels across and 1500 pixels down.

5in x 5in at 72 dpi is 360 pixels across and 360 pixels down.

In this case you are dealing with different amounts of pixels for the same size in inches (dots PER inch). So the texture, which is still only a set number of pixels, gets either really small or really big depending on the size of the document.

Since you said you have to zoom in to see it correctly, I'm guessing your resolution was way too high for the texture and that you're ending up with a giant document for a fairly small texture. The best solution is to get a better texture that is higher resolution (more pixels), or reduce the resolution of your document as small as you can afford and still have it print correctly.

With the information you have given me I can now make the needed adjustments to get the texture effect to print out correctly. Thanks MindBender. :}
