Default grid and lines

I'm trying to put some lines or grid to a part of my layout (header) in PS. Even a header is on separate layer I can't do it. I can put lines (or pattern) on whole picture but cant on part when select. I did try mask and all I can remember. Is this posible? Please help.

I don't understand. It should be easy to put the pattern on a separate layer and use a layer mask to mask out those areas that shouldn't be visible or am I missing something?

It should be easy but it is not, that is why I ask a question...sorry if I bother you.

I expected you to come up with a reply that would explain in more detail every step and not an answer like "sorry if I bother you".

I only said that it "should" be easy and not that it "is" easy.

Ime, can you post an example of what you mean, or explain further? I, too am having trouble understanding the effect you're trying for, but I'll be glad to help with further explanation.

Thank you AppleCider for reply and help. Problem was with
ctrl + click (I forgot-did not know, to do that) on active layer, and after that I have no problems.
