Default Ideas?? external HD ....PC to Mac

Just a quick question

pc user with low harddrive space running win98se almost a gig of ram

question I am buying a lacie120gig external HD which is compatable with my system

Am going to be using this for images specifically and plan to keep them in PShop format.

Will ther be any problem transfering in AppleG5 at a later date.
Will the G5 recognize the PS files
Do I just hot plug it into the back or do it by network ethernet hookup from PC to mac

Ideas on this would be much help.

finally have yet to hook this HD up to the pc do you thinkit will be hot pluggable right out of the box.

Will the lacie120gigHD have to formatted.

Will windows98se require partitioning of this harddrive.

Any help you can offer on this would be much appreciated

Laura

The mac will recognise FAT32 partitioning. That way, files are easily transferred between both systems (I have a 20GB mobile drive for backup).
If I'm not mistaken, the drive will have to be partitioned as FAT32 does not support partitions larger than 30 of 32GB. (can't remember exactly).
You should have USB on both puters. Prefereably USB2 highspeed that goes at 480 Mbit (not bytes! [innocent] ) per second, but it also works with 1.1 which is limited to 12Mbit/sec.
You may plug it in with the puter on once it is installed.

But Win 98SE will need drivers installed first.

etc...

If you don't have the manual that gives an outstanding description of all this (LaCie is [righton] ), then you can download it from their website: www.lacie.com

macs use a fork, but pc needs extensions. So if ever you work on the mac and want to otransfer to pc, don't forget to add the extension. And if we're talking images, then save them in LAB mode and tiff or psd.

Hi, Laura, and welcome!

Simplest way, at least to me, is to simply network the Mac and the PC, and make the Mac in charge of the network. It's a lot easier to set up in OS X than in Win98. (I know, I have both.)

Erik has a good point about file extensions, but be careful in OS X. It automatically adds an extension, that may be hidden (depending on how you have X set up) so if you add another one the PC will whine about it Also, when transferring a Mac file to the PC, always choose "data" when the PC asks you what part of the file you want to keep (usually data or resource).

Good luck!

Yup. Good point Julie. Win also hides known extensions, but I immediately set that one off because I like to see what I am working with.

Second good point: 98SE!. Indeed, between mac and pc it's far better to use OSX (a G5 comes with Panther, or you can upgrade to it at very cheap price)

Yet beware of OSX 10.2.7 as it's about as buggy as Win ME.

O, I forgot to add that, due to the restriction in FAT32, you'll need to make several partitions.
120GB will take its time...

thanks much for replying
for replying erik and julie

I am not much of a technocrat

I think someone I know someone that has a partion magic program do that I think will help with that formatting

If I ever want to use the hard drive only with the mac can it be totally erased
and used as such?

I don't have usb2 [confused] what I do have is an ethernet hookup that was used as an old modem hookup
can I communicate with the mac with that?

cheers laura

Yes you can use it solely on the mac afterwards.

USB is for connecting external hardware that needs higher data transmission speed because files are larger. Compare it to Firewire like pc comares to Mac.
Ethernet is something different: it is used to connect two computers together in a network, with a crosslink cable if you have two, or with a real server if you have many. It comes at various speeds, and the newest is already in megabytes.

The difference is that USB and Firewire are used for passive things like hard disk drives, external CDburners, drawing tablets, scanners and digital cameras, whilst Ethernet needs two active puters with an operating system on them.
