Is there a way to get rid of the window that comes up whenever I try to delete a layer which asks me if I want to delete a layer. I'm using PS 7.

Ya just hold down the ALT/Opt key when you click the trash can.

Either that or just drag the layer into the trash can. :B

Also ??to delete more than one layer at a time; first link all the layers you want to delete, they don't even have to be consecutive layers. Now do as Mark says and hold down Alt (or Option if your on a mac like me) and click the trash icon

Friendly correction: you must hit ctrl+alt to delete linked layers.

I was just about to come back and ask why it isn't working. I've tried using the Option and the Option-Control buttons but neither work the way it has been described.
If I link 2 layers and hold down the Option button while clicking on the Trash only the one that is removed is the one that happens to be highlighted .
The same is true if I hold down the Option and Control button while I click on the Trash.

Am I missing something or what [confused]

Ok, the default behavior for Photoshop is if your highlighted layer is also linked to other layers and you hit ctrl and hit the trash can, it should bring up a warning that says, "Delete all currently linked layers?" [Yes or no?]. Keeping the alt button down merely suppresses this warning, but ctrl is the button that will actually perform the behavior. Note that one of the layers that is linked MUST BE HIGHLIGHTED at the time you push the garbage can icon. If it does not act this way, then your photoshop installation is damaged, and i'd do a re-install(if you do this make sure to save all custom stuff and preferences in a different folder than the prog. files)

I'm using a Mac and it doesn't act the way you describe.
#1, If I have one of the layers highlighted and other layers linked and push just the trash button without any other button being pushed I get the message (Delete Layer #x ) what ever that number the highlighted layer happens to be.

#2 If I repeat the above process and this time hold down the Option button it deletes the layer right away, without any message.

#3 If I repeat the process again this time holding down the Control button I get the same thing happening as I did in the first example.

Off the topic slightly , if I have a number of layers linked and then highlight another layer does that layer then also become linked ?

limey, you are correct. On a Mac, you hold down the option key while clicking the trash icon. The usual method of distinguishing between Mac and PC shortcuts is the way Mark did it: Alt/Opt. The Alt is for the PC, Opt for the Mac.

That's a good thing to remember; for tutorials written for the PC, when you see Alt substitute Option, for Cntrl substitute Cmd, for right-click substitute Cntrl (unless you have a multiple button mouse with one button set as the Cntrl key).

As for your last question: No, simply activating (highlighting) a layer does not link it to linked layers; you have to click on the link box to link it. (This is behavior you want, BTW; you wouldn't want to unexpectedly link a layer.)

ah Limey - you should have said you were on a mac before.

I've always used macs too but so used to describing PC shortcuts that I always say "control" instead if command now. Nearly always when you see the word "control" or "cntrl" it actually means your command key, which has the delicious Apple icon on it [righton]

To delete the layers hold down your Apple or Command key, and the alt/option key and hit the trash icon - that will work

Photoshop is a true "cross platform" application which works exactly the same on both Pcs and Macs - but when dealing with the web you need to know this ??heres the full keyboard translation for you ??

PC = Mac
Control = Command/apple
Alt = Option
Right click = Your "Control" key
