Default Photoshop 6 PNG

Hi all.

Iv'e been using Photoshop Elements 2 recently but, it has become a little limited in certain areas.
I purchased Elements because my Corel PhotoPaint's PNG export filter is flawed.
The PNG export in Elements 2 is flawless and I would just like to know if version 6 of Photoshop is likewise.
I've read there were a few problems with version 5.5's PNG filter and version 7 is a little to pricey for me at the moment so, any comments from those still using version 6 would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Sark

Welcome to the community Sark. [honesty]

As far as i'm aware, PS6's PNG capabilities are just fine.

But what exactly do you mean when you say "flawed"? Explain that please.

Thanks for the replies.

hedsteve?. I suspect it will be a while before PS 8 affects the price of version 7 but, I will certainly keep an eye on ebay over the coming weeks.

theKeeper?. Photopaint doesn't handle PNG anti-aliasing very well. If you export an anti-aliased bitmap from Photopaint the anti-aliased pixels are both semi-transparent and opaque. When overlaid on an object of a similar colour you can see the whitened opaque pixels. Elements doesn't do this, it correctly uses transparency alone to anti-alias edge pixels.

CorelDraws GIF export is flawed as well. This anti-aliases straight lines, including external edges, which causes grid lines on images created by tiling GIF's. The anti-aliased edges have to be removed in Photopaint prior to use. Oddly this is not a bug but this is how Corel believes it should be done ????

Perhaps I misunderstand you completely (wouldn't be my first time) but what you describe looks like an edge pixels problem to me...
did you read

Does this look like your problem, and a solution to it?

Erik Hi.

Just to be clear, my first post was a criticism of Corels PhotoPaint.
Your link leads to an Adobe Photoshop tutorial, which would resolve the PhotoPaint issue but, no such option exists in PhotoPaint.
Even working with a tranparent background in PhotoPaint, white is still added to the edge pixels.

Just to clarify..The PNG export in Elements anti-aliases the edge pixels by applying varying degrees of transparency rather than adding white or a background opaque colour to the edge pixels.

I used Photopaint some years ago, before I chose PS...if I remember well, it was version 9. BUt I cannot help you here as I only recall a very nice transparancy tool...
I cannot install it again on this puter as the language is different and also because I only install what I use.
Sorry.

I'm currently using version 9 myself Erik.

The problem would not be noticable unless you were placing the PNG's on top of similar coloured objects.
Applying a gaussian blur and exporting to PNG is naturally more noticable.

Version 11 has more options, including the ability to apply transparency to the masked area on PNG export.
However, when I tried 11 I could never get this to work, or find anyone who could, even the method described in the help files and manual resulted in the same problem.

I had other problems with version 11 which resulted in me selling it. At the time I wasn't willing to upgrade from my Win2K OS to XP or wait for the first Corel service pack. These steps may have helped but I would rather make the leap to PhotoShop as I am also considering purchasing After Effects.

Thanks for your response.

For what it's worth Erik.

I've now discovered it's possible, in PP version 11, to resolve the issue by using a background colour that is the same as the exported object/s.
Assuming the exported object/s has only one colour this apparently works.

No such restriction in Elements and no doubt PS as well.
Will certainly go the PhotoShop route.

Thanks for the replies
