Hello all. Long time no see.

I am designing graphics for a website that deals with warship simulations. (My first web design ever...gulp!) I'm more used to using vector graphics than Photoshop so I am relatively pleased with how these banner graphics have come out so far. However they seem just a bit too clean and even. Does anyone know of any good effects for creating textures that simulate spot rust or oil grime or even condensation? I'm not particularly happy with my crude attempt at chipped paint either. I know this must seem like a strange request and it's a lot to ask.

Any tips or comments would be much appreciated...Thanks and long live the Keeper!

Hi, RackToon!

If I remember correctly, you do comics, right?

Anyway, you might want to check out Mark's grunge tutorial. As there are several layers, filters, etc. there's lots of opportunity to play around and adjust to your needs.

So far, your banners look good! As you say they need a bit more randomness, but you've got a great start [righton] [/url][/u]

Wow! Great link. I'll have to give it a go. Thanks AC!

I'm also tickled that someone remembers me from my few cartoon posts way back in January

looks good RackToon maby a tad large but maby you are going to scale them down b4 u use them on the site or should that banner cover the entire top prtion of the page ?? =)

any way if you want rust then there are alot of neeat tuts out there like marks that AppleCider pointed out =)

but if you want an way to quick and simple add rust to your images and not making an entire new texture file the i gott what you need =)

check out the simple and quick rust tut over at my site if you like =)

Rock on

Thanks abbe. They will each eventually be reduced to 800 pixels wide in their finished form. I just put four banners together in one graphic for illustration purposes.

Hey Racktoon, nice to see you again. I love the cartoon you just posted, ahhaa. Very witty. [righton]

I must offer some advice for your banners/headers if they're intended for a Website. Do not use 800 pixels for the width. Although it's designated as an "8x6" design, using the full 800 px width will not workout.

This is a common mistake made all the time.
You have to figure in the "window chrome". In general, the maximum width one can use with the best chance of not having a bottom scroll on the page is 760px.

People have their systems setup slightly different, so there needs to be a slight bit of room for variance.

Anywho... thought i'd offer that for what it's worth.

Thanks Keeper! (Can you tell I'm a noob at all this? ) I will happily take any advice I can get. I'll pass that information on to the site's owner.

[righton] B7 Really great work thus far on those banner graphics, RackToon!

And the "sublime" is a winner! I love it! SUB-LIME.... [bustagut] [bustagut] [bustagut]

Good to see you back...

[shhh] Just a friendly reminder...when posting pics, please keep them under 650 px width. This prevents having to use the horizontal scroll bar! No biggie this time around...

Sorry about the size Wendy. They are a wee bit obnoxious. ;\

I tried some elements of Mark's grunge tut on my next banner. I'm still experimenting and I need some backshadows but I like the look of this much better. [righton]
I had never really played around with filters before so it has been a bit of a revelation.
