As to whether a machine freezes or not usually has a lot to do with the way it is set up.I use a Mac and it really does hardly ever freeze up,with the exception of Internet explorer which freezes at least once nightly, and also if I forget to take the pen tools filter from Wacom out of PS plugins that will freeze up PS or make it do something strange,or other 3rd party plugins sometimes also.

I am curious though what were you doing to un zip the folder on the machines?,it should just be double click and browse to stuffit expander {or stuffit opens automatically} and voila your file sitting on the desktop .......sounds like you have had some back experiences at uni with badly setup machines, and I suppose a bit ironically maybe its usually because the techs are just PC trained and dont seem to know the quirks of the OS as everyone learns on their own puters.

As for the Apple advertizing well not every Mac user agrees with that style of advertizing for one.No I dont believe they are the fastest desktop, but they are pretty quick all the same and no one will know how quick etc they are until Panther is released and the apps being tested are optimized for it,so the bench marks bollocks we are seeing at the moment is immaterial until these things are done, and by then there will be new Xeons and Opterons etc and then they wont be as fast at all anymore and then someone will release a new model again and so on and so on.

Who really cares???
Each to his own, personal choice.

Neither is significantly better, and each has it's own attributes and shortcomings.

This stupidity doesn't deserve to be moved, it should just be locked out, as the eternal debate on "which is better" does NOT have anything to do with Photoshop, as Adobe has done an admirable job in enabling BOTH platforms to create equally.

BORING and OLD!!!
Instead of trying to stir a s--- pot of trouble with such "debates", why don't you post some work and create a challenge of Mac/Win creations and be productive instead of stirring dissent and agitation...

Simple things like that annoy me, Like they dont like it when you pull the mouse out etc.

Ya, I pretty much have a bad experience with Macs at uni everyday. They are currently moving from Mac to PC's gradually, and the techs I think are used to the Macs, but I rarely see them about hehe.
Its not a matter of unzipping, its a case of the machines not reading or picking up the firewire zips. The plug and play doesnt seem to operate as well on them I feel.

I have only briefly tested OS10 and that seemed ok, be interesting to see how the new G5 and os10 will go.

I care, and I think any sensible consumer who is in the market for a new machine cares.

Anything over 1 ghz or so, will do just fine for most anything IMHO... and this is coming from someone who still uses a lowly Celeron400 eh...

but, I have had ops to test drive some cool toys at the stores eh, to which I dwnloaded Wings3d onto said machines and pumped up the poly counts (Wings is notorious for being slow at higher polyt counts) ... and... like I said, anything over a ghz does just fine, from there it is more a matter of how much ram ya got, whether or not you have a vcard or just a chip, how fast your drive is bla bla...

So don't anybody get hyped into power is all, because past a certain point it is really more about workflow and knowledge than power eh...

As for mac vs pc in general, well... I wouldn't throw away a nice new mac if someone bestowed it upon me for sure, as I would love to explore this platform, but... personaly, I am rather used to the PC way and find no reason to change... on the other hand I am sure that the mac user feels pretty much the same way bout his/her beloved Macs which he/she is accustomed to... they are only tools eh, the rest come from within

The only real difference I see which would affect me between these two platforms is the software ported to each... other than that it is all about the time put in doing... whatever

happy creat'n eh

Gidgit, I know what your saying about the power etc. There is a point, but with new software continually comming out, one wants to get a machine that isnt just fast now, but fast enough to last 2 years... perhaps more before upgrading.

Its not really the power that gets my irk with macs anyhows, its their lack of functionality. I have worked on Macs and PCs for over 3 years in various jobs and studies, and I can never get used to Macs for some reason. Especially their file system and operating platform.

However, having said that, OS 10 has improved that by adding a start bar of sorts, and windows style windows hehe.

Namvet, no one is forcing anyone to enter the post.

Fact is this is a hot topic within the professional side of the industry. I posted this after reading an article in Computer Arts on the new G5, then, thinking most people here were serious proffesionals or serious about becomming proffesional, they might have some input on the debate.

I am obviously wrong.

Like I said earlier, I dont go past a week day without hearing about it. And its in virtually every magazine I read one way or another, be it comparing displays or software compatability. Especially now the new MAC technology is being released.

Just because a few of you might not be interested doesn't mean such a debate, discussion whatever, won't bennifet someone else.

I actually am interested in hearing points on all sides of the arguments, god forbid someone might have an opinion on the machine that might make me more tolerable towards them, or infact one day make me consider buying one. Which at this point still seems unlikely.

Ok guys, sorry... i gotta step in here for a sec...

Stick this was supposed to be a "debate" of sorts, was it not? If you actually read your initial post you'll see that you didn't really set the stage for any type of debate. Basically there's just some Mac bashing going on.

I thought i'd leave the thread open in the hopes that a healthy discussion might ensue. But even after others took part, i still don't see any kind of "debate" going on... there's still just Mac bashing. I've seen no mention of PC stats that are presented in a 'comparitive' manner to Macs. Which would then provide a formal stage for a "technical" debate.

My comment about "people are over this" was intended to imply that people are over this subject and don't care to talk about it much anymore. Usually it's because as was mentioned, a lot of us have been using comps for decades and have heard this story presented in many different forms, but always covering and leading to the same thing.

As Gidgit mentioned... nowadays, dispite what the big companies would like you to believe, there is no difference in performance, if you're willing to pay for it. It's more a hardware issue nowadays than an OS issue. To be a professional in this biz does not require you to have the latest'n'greatest system. It only requires you have a system that can give you the power/speed you need to do what you have to do. The rest is up to each "professional" to know their OS and software well enough to create a finely tuned workflow.

And honestly, that's all there is to this issue. And it's been this way for a very long time. I suggest people not take the marketing hype so seriously, and focus on learning their software.

And that's my 2? on this subject... for the last time.

And guys... unless you're wishing to partake in a healthy debate on this issue, please do not post in this thread just to say you disapprove of it's subject matter. Because IMHO that's just a "unpreductive" as some feel this whole thread is to begin with.
