Default Photoshop windows

I have a couple of issues and I don't have a clue what's up. Wendy might say that's nothing new but, hey......one does what one can.

Anyway, I turned off PS auto update two months ago as I thought that was one of my problems. Every now and then I get a window that pops up when I start PS and asks if I want to reset all my preferences now? Huh? I didn't change anything. Nor did I update anything. I thought it was the updates that were changing everything back to default but evidently not. Does anyone know why my program does this. It's a pain to keep resetting my prefs.

Second, just today, when I would minimize a window and then hit the button for it to reappear it opens full screen. All my minimized windows are doing it now. Did I accidentally change something? It won't stop and I would like them to reopen the size they were minimized.

As always, thanks everyone.

In your place, I'd try a fresh install. Setting prefs included, this takes twenty minutes at the most.
No guarantee that it solves all your probs, but, if I remember well, you already deleted your prefsn,a dn that didn't help. This leaves us only one option: total destruction, and a reincarnation!

Lee, to have the message appear at startup, you need to hold down ALT+CTRL+Shift... have you got a program that might trigger those keys?

For the windows, you mean that instead of having one window open full screen, they all do it? once again, if you hold shift, you can apply "window" changes to all open images in Photoshop... (like full screen view, or closing, etc...) once again, the problem is related with keystrokes...

there might be another culprit than photoshop...

Hi Lee!

And thanks for the "quote"... [bustagut]

Funny you mention about the 'preferences thing'... for the very FIRST TIME, in as long as I can remember (doesn't say much), I fired up PS this morning and I got greeted with the "new user" screen dialogue box inasmuch as setting profiles, scratch disk and that sort of thing... same as you Lee! 8[

What's the expression? SH*T HAPPENS!!!

Files do get corrupted... things go awry. So far, I haven't been too disturbed (no missing preferences)... but from the sounds of what you're going through Lee, I might heed Erik's advice and go for a "fresh install"...

Thanks all. I'll try all your suggestions before doing a fresh install.

Pierre, I never heard of that trick. I'll try it as soon as I get off the board. [righton]

Five hours later -

Okay, I tried the holding the shift key per Pierre's suggestion and evidently I didn't do it right as I didn't get a dialog box. So, in frustration, I took Eric's advise and just did a complete reinstall of the program. Funny thing happened, however. First, it did not correct the problem. Any window that I minimize and then try and open again always opens to full screen instead of the window size I minimized with. Second, going to the File>Open Recent selection there are still the images I last used before reinstalling. How can that be? I just installed PS from scratch. There should be nothing in the Open Recent tab....................right??? Or is that information stored someplace else. Lastly, I went into the Help>Updates window. As I have had this program for almost 6 months or longer now I should have had updates. I was getting them before yet now, after my reinstall, it showed that I needed no updates.

Too strange. Any suggestions? Is there a control in Windows XP that governs window size when minimizing and re-opening?

Thanks..........................I need a drink.

Seems like an obvious question, Lee... but one I must ask! [saywhat] [confused] Did you "uninstall" first and then "reinstall"... [confused] [confused] [confused]

[bustagut] [bustagut] [bustagut] Lee!

Shiny buttons aside, I just had to ask ... one never knows! [innocent]

As for XP, no... I'm running XP and have never encountered this problem. [stuned]

Quite frankly, I'm stumped [confused] ... but then that happens easily with me as I'm no "techie"! :B

Mystery solved. I'm so good. B7 Well, that might be just a slight overstatement. Let's say lucky and we'll call it a day. ;\

Anyway, the problem - WindowBlinds. A program for WinXP that allows you to change the look of your GUI. Website ishttp://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=1 I have been hearing about it for months. Really a lot of fun if you're creative and HATE the way MS gave us WIndows. The Mac looks so cool and Windows so............................well, I'll be polite and say boring.

I paid my $19.95 and got the program. Took hours to go through all the skins to find the ones I liked but now I have about 8 and switch everyday just like my wallpaper. Only bug so far is in PS. When you minimize and reopen it opens the window full screen. I emailed the company and I'm sure they'll have a fix in one of the upcoming parches.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Now if I can just find why it automatically goes back to default settings once every month or two. That has nothing to do with WindowBlinds as it was doing that before I got the program. And Wendy had it happen to her also. Oh, well.

Oh, Sue, hows that program working that I sent you? Got it set up yet?
