Default Monitor callibration

I am creating a website with graphics made in photoshop 7 and have a simple question for you. My images look great on my computer with my settings but how do I know what they will look like on everybody elses pc?
Is there a standard set of monitor settings? I dont know what my monitor defaults are, (not in instruction manual) any help or thoughts about this would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,
Simon

Welcome Groges!

Apart from calibrating your monitor, if you're designing strictly for the web, using the "web safe palette" will ensure consistent color across various computer platforms. This palette contains 216 colors out of a possible 256. That's because the remaining 40 colors vary on Macs and PCs. By eliminating the 40 variable colors, this palette is optimized for cross-platform use.

For further information and understanding, I refer you to this article http://www.zdnet.com/mac/webguide/webcolor.html

Sorry, but that websafe is outdated. Someone gave it a real try, and apartf from some greyish greens and blues all is different.

As for knowing the results on another monitor: as most monitors aren't calibrated (= adjusted to some standard), neither on the mac or on pc, you have no guarantee whatsoever that people will see what you made the way you made it. That is a second reason to forget about the so-called safe side of the web. It is an anarchy and will stay one for a very long time (I hope). On my site, I ask people to adjust at least the gamma (greyscale), but most won't, just like they also don't install that nifty font you chose for "real" viewing.

Life is hard, and at the end you die. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
Never mind.

After Calibrating ur monitor....

Go to edit>colour settings and switch to (ur likely already on it) sRGB IEC61966-2.1 under rgb section, thats the default monitor profile for pc, adobe 98 is default for MAC. (i think)

There is no way whatsoever to be 100% certain it will look the same for most people, infact I reckon you would be lucky to get 10% lol.

Next time you walk past a tv store, have a look at all the display tv's, no doubt all showing the same program will have different picture quality and colour.

Then, you have the human eye to contend with, everyones eye cones respond differently to addative colour (RGB) so one shade of purple will be another persons pink (maybe not that bad lol...but u get my drift)

Ur best bet is to test whatever it is ur working on....on different machines. And above all consider the demographic most likely to view it.

Yup, Eric and stickdeisel have it right. The best you can do is calibrate your machine so you see it right, test what you can, and hope for the best.

Everybody`s monitors are different.
