Guys, can anyone here give a clue as to why i my mercators constantly get jaggerd lines when i apply the spherize filter? The only time i dont is when i use really thin lines, like 1 or 2 px. I understand "pixels are square" and all that jazz, just cant figure why the lines in the tute are nice and sharp while mine are not.
I am not yet crash hot at pushing pixels where they normally wont go, so if anyone could tell me how to get a smooth mercator i would be extremely grateful
yep, i have done the tute like 6 times now lol. I have only steered off once and that was when i used a grid fill I created ages ago as opposed to sketch/halftone filter.
It appears as though you may be OVER sharpening the lines.
I just went back to that tute and REWROTE the ending -- "Cleanup" section. Try the tute again and see what gives. I think it'll work out ok for ya now.
I re did the merc but still get jaggered lines. I did the clean up you suggested and whilst that fixes the blur and makes the lines more defined it doesnt fix the jaggered edge cause by the spherize command.
Looking at your examples, they appear clean and sharp throughout.
before i applied the spherize filter, i selected the grid, feathered 1 px, deleted the original merc layer and filled with black, this then allowed me to spherize the without jaggered edges. It made the lines blured, but your tips using levels fixed that!
Might I suggest adding this before step 7??? For those who experience jaggered lines after applying the spherize filter.
It's good to see you've resolved your problem Stick but this is still unresolved in my mind. I don't see how your lines could get so jagged under "normal" circumstances.
I can't really add that "step" you did in the tute, because as i said, yours is a very unusual situation... not something most/any other people will experience.
We need to figure out why your lines are getting messed up like that. And there's only a couple reasons i can think of off-hand, but you've stated that you're following the steps precisely, so... i'm a tad stumped.
Can you attach you psd file for me here? Do this ok... create the grid on one layer, then dupe that layer and spherize it. Then save a attach the file here so i can examine it. I want to see a "before & after" of your grid layer.
