Heres a couple of really stupid questions that are driving me nuts. [confused] 1)When creating a new document in photoshop 7 how do i get rid of that black border around the image. 2)How do I unlock the background layer. (thought that i could delete the border)

Yep definately newbie questions.

Your 2 questions have been asked a multitude of times by many people,so dont feel stupid ok



1 - I think you are talking {not sure} about an illusion,because if you zoom way into your image does the black line disappear?


2 - Just click on the text of the bottom layer and re name it,that will unlock it.You can also copy the layer by dragging the layer in the layers palette onto the little icon at the bottom of that palette which looks like a page,so then you have your normal background layer {locked} and a copy above it with no lock upon it.

Thanks for your help Stu, part 2 has been entered into my brain.
But the box around my image is puzzling. Everything I import has the box, (thin black line all the way around) the really annoying thing is that it is included when i save the file as a gif. I cannot find any other references to this and am wondering if it is a bug of some sort.

Welcome to the board Groges [righton]

That thin line is always there in Photoshop, even in your preview window when you try to save the file as GIF, but it will not be stored in the file itself. Just open your files in everything other than Photoshop to check this.

Trust me, there's no such thing as a "stupid question"... the only "stupid question" is that which one doesn't ask. How else is one to learn? [confused]

To "satisfy yourself" re the "thin black line" (a default framing action in Photoshop), just open up the image in your browser!

In the meantime, enjoy your experience with PS and your time on the board!

As it turns out the problem was with xp, for some reason viewing the gif through xp shows the box (thats why i thought it was in the gif) but viewing it in fireworks or flash shows the image the way it is meant to be.

Welcome Groges... looks like everyone has sorted you out. FYI - you can also rename your layer by double clicking on it
