WTC, if you still can't figure it out..
new layer
the hor/ver type mask tool
choose a gradient
apply the gradient

To answer your question, WarmingTheCurb, make sure that your text is on a separate layer and use a "layer effect style" on it.

At the bottom of your layers palette, click on the first icon (the black circle with the "f" inside) and the layer effect drop down menu will open. Choose "gradient overlay". When you do so, another dialogue box will open where you can choose a gradient, define your own, or load preset gradients. Refer to my image below.
