Default Help with metal

Hi,

I'm back :o)

Used to be regular here but switched to 3D. After a while I started working
on low poly modeling so I found my self sometimes work more than
50% of the time with 2D ( for texturing my models ).

Anyway, here is the human knight from the game I'm working on
and I have problems making his texture metalic, I wanna try make
it shiny metal.

I'm attaching the human knight model and part of it's texture ( the
chest ), at the end his body armour will be black metal and his shoes
and hand guards will be gold.

Thanks for the help, feel free to use the part of the texture I attached
to make it metal and tell me how you did it cause I really tried everything
I know but with no good results.

I can't use textures since the texture of the knight is built from many
parts and if I'll use textures it'll be seen in the connecting areas.

The highlights are already there ( burn and dodge brushes ).

Thanks !

Ran

just go to the links section ... in the tutorial links thread there are loads to get the desired effect. best thing i can suggest is "chroming" tutorials.

here's one i found

Thanks,

I didn't think about motion blur, might do the trick, the problem with
all the tutorials about chrome and metal is that they are for text
effects and they use the Lightning Effects filter and I can't use it cause
it'll make differene in the sides of the textures and it'll be seen when
they are connected, I just need the parts to stay like they are but
look metalic, I don't need the lightning effect for the metal since I
already draw the highlights.

Thanks again,

Ran

Hi Ran... glad to see you back again. [excited]

Here... i wrote this for someone on the Ozone Asylum board... see if this helps you at all: http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/1272/

It looks dark against this blunt white bg... but it can be easily lightned to taste. You can see the texture better in that page i linked to. The page bg is dark.

Hi Mark, long time , I'm glad to be back to the best Photoshop
forum.

The link you attached is great, it's just the effect I want - a black metal,
I'll check it out on the model tomorrow.

Now another request how do I make gold metal ? I did get all kind
of gold effects by playing but I'm looking for an effect that will realy
look like metal.

Scorpion, great link, I used the link, added a bit more noise to the
already noised and highlighted texture and motion blured it just a tiny
bit and then used some contrast and brightness and then curves and
I really got a great metal effect ( gray "real" one ).

Thanks,

Ran

Grrrrrrrrrr

Texturing Metal drives me crazy, I made the basic texture for simple
plate armour the knight starts with, not so happy with the results.

crits welcome.

Thanks

good! [righton] Cept for metal is usually looking better when it is darker. Try using the colour burn tol with diffrent sizes (opac: 67%) Heres what I got for an example: (try it yourself you'll get something better) Also, the cloth things hanging from his waist both go STRAIGHT down... it just kinda seems odd to me. Unless he's suppose to be a statue Other than that, Very good! [righton] [righton]

Hi Alistair

great work there, I use mostly the dodge and burn tool for my texture
work, you are so right, it really looks much more like metal when
darker, I'll go back to work on that texture, now I'm working on
another texture for the human knight.

The things in the front are part of the consept art - I model and texture
so I follow the consept art of another team member, wait till you see
what he's got in the back he's got like a skirt or something.
But no worry it's devided to 3 polygons in the height so when animated
it'll move.

Thanks again, and yes I think I'll give the arms and face a bit more
life.

Ok, I started working on other texture for the knight armour - this time
the black one, still haven't looked at Mark's tutorial but it's the next
thing I'm gonna do cause I couldn't reach a black metal look

Anyway here are two screen shots of WIP ( Work In Progress ) texture.

Ran

P.s. : also couldn't reach a gold effect.
