Thanks Moth, Shaun, Lily, Gaussian & Welles, for kind comments
You're right Moth. I have a tendency to "oversaturate" when it comes to colour. [innocent] I'm aware of it and I'm trying to work on it (tone things down) so that my work looks more natural...
Excellent work Shaun! :} :} Your final version looks very natural, indeed! As Gaussian said, it's amazing just what you can make out of 'seemingly' nothing! [excited]
And, I have no doubt that your son will be positively thrilled with your work and, more importantly, you've made the 'boss' very happy! |

Wendy,
I think you should keep the slight exaggeration of intensity as one of the definite colorization possibilities in your palette of possibilities for there will be occasions when the subtly more stylized approach yielding a dramatic flair would be highly sought after. I happen to like the result a great deal as it reminds me of a fine hand colorization rather than a restored photograph. That was a great art form in it's own right.

Just wanted to add a message from the boss - she thinks you made a marvellous job of colourising the photo.

Postscript....
I found another old picture of John - same vintage - but this one had been kept in an old album and forgotten....
So, to compare:

Rep Power: 7 | and another challenge?
I was about to start trying to colourise this one, and then realised I'd forgotten what everyone had suggested; one of the benefits of getting older...
Then I thought, well, let's post it and let everyone who wants to have a go at colourising it.
Grandad Joe and Grandma Florence posing (about 1910) for their picture as an engaged couple. Grannie's dad in the background (don't know where he's hidden the shotgun; apparently it was necessary ...)
Grannie doesn't look as worried as Grandad.

Nice picture.
Just a quick one. Slight color correction, some sharpening, background blur and a separate curves adjustment on the sweater.
I don't like to retouch too much in general, especially facial feautures, because before you know it looks unnatural.
