Hey guys, I am currently playing around with a header design for my portfolio. Just wondering if anyone out there can help me get a glass tile effect as opposed to the one demonstrated. Would like to see how it looks. I tried applying some of the elements used in the glass pill tut (not in the example attached), but it doesnt seem to work in this scenario. Because they are tiles I think the effect would need to apply to all the tiles as a whole as opposed to one tile duplictaed etc.
Hi stickdiesel, how about encapsulating the whole thing and make it as if it is just one tile. Or encapsulate just one half, either the plain squares - or the keyed tiles.
I don't think it would work trying to do it to the individual squares.
Not a bad thought Rantin, I might try and get a glass sheet effect as oppossed to tiles. And have the "digital art" etc seen through it. Be worth playing with, a bit of a shift in concept but I think that attitude sometimes produces best results hehe.
Thanks for the compliment Gauss, I hope it was hehe.
thats a cool effect stroker, i dont know why but cd cover or poster for a trance/breaks dj comes to mind. Would very much suit a rave style design How did you do it? Dont know if I would use for my site, but would like to play around with the effect and see what can come up with.
I agree about the monotony of my design so far, though I am trying to go for a neat/clean and sharp design, so dont want to anything to outragous. Though the site will continually evolve over the course of my studies and morph alot i think lol.
stickdiesel, I really like the design and the 'clean' look that you have going... [righton] too much 'glitz' can be overkill. I'm not saying that a glass (shiny/reflective) [righton] effect wouldn't be cool, too, though.. [excited]
Ya Im of the same opinion wbiss, too much glitz ruins a good concept, have to be very careful, but dont want to be boring at same time, it's a fine line hehe. Nothing wrong with white space etc hehe. Digital art and digital design are two very different things
First, I made a D-Map. (Are you surprised? Seems like I'm always doing this.)
For the quick example above, I just painted a bunch sloppy black strokes on a white background. Tossed in some gray strokes just for fun.
Then I used Displace and the D-Map. Important that Tile is used! The percentages I used were 30% and 30%.
After that, it's just a matter of doing whatever to make it even cooler. Of course, try different percentages. Or try it on a photo. Try it on Clouds/Difference Clouds. Mess with blending modes. Toss in Curves. Change opacity. Add a Gradient Map Ad-Layer. You know the drill.
One of the things I did was add a Layer Mask in a grid pattern that matches the D-Map. That is, a 25x25 doc with a 1px border, Edit > Define Pattern, and Edit > Fill on the layer mask. Then I add a layer with very light gray beneath.
Stick, I don't expect you to get crazy with it. If you do add this effect to your banner, you'll probably want to tone it down. But you knew that.
I'm attaching a PSD file. This is what I used for a D-Map. Feel free to pull part, mess with, and ask questions about.
