Rep Power: 0 | Why is the font layer not cooperating?
Hello forum! I hope you can answer this question since I am pulling my hair out!
I've created a text layer (the letter X) and originally arranged it to be sent to the back of another layer, which is text. After creating the X as a spot channel and filling with black, the X now appears OVER the front text layer....and now I don't have the option highlighted to re-send it to the back so that it doesn't cover up the text I need to show.
How do I make the X go to the back of the text layer and not be in front after it has now become a spot channel?
(here is what it should look like...part of the X in metallic is behind the "st alphonsus....." text.....sorry don't have a copy of the problem X!)
hope someone can help |

Why is the font layer not cooperating? Post #2 | | Guest | Why is the font layer not cooperating?
Hi Jennifer,
The problem is that the Spot Channel cannot be moved like a layer.
It will always be on top of the other Base Channels.
I'll check up the details and full explanation for you, unless anyone can roll it off the top of their head.
A work-around would be to make a selection from the 'Top Text' layer.
Make your "X" layer active.
Either create a mask from the selection. Just click the Make Mask Icon.
or delete the selection.
This will "Punch out" the Spot Channel you have created.

Back again,
Check out your online Photoshop Help from the main menu.
S > Spot Channels.
Full info and description in there.
Here's the basics.

Why spot channels? When creating, just place your X on a layer and fill it. Then you can move it.
When you add a channel, you add separated information. This will always be visible when you have it activated. Channels are used for storing masks that can be loaded as selections.
When your design is ready, then you will have to work with spot channels IF and only IF you want a colour that is not printable with CMYK. Like a pantone colour, a varnish, a metalfoil or a fluo ink.
And beware: you need the pantone book for the papertype you chose (glossy, matte,..) to see what colour it will be because your monitor is no reference at all. And you desktop printer even less.
What your offset printer needs is separated files that enable him to make the offset plates. C, M, Y and K. And for every colour (pantone,...) you want to add, you will have to pay. So have a good reason to use extra colours, and spot channels.
