I confess that I'm the first to bypass contrast/brightness and levels adjustments and head straight to curves. [innocent] However, I now know (depending on the image) that this isn't necessary a good thing...

I too will tend to shun brightness/contrast. I don't really think in terms of which one to choose, but often have good luck with using combinations of levels and curves. Using levels to adjust global lighting and then curves to grab just one area for fixing. It is easy to spend an hour tweaking something and then sit back and look at it only to realize you've adjusted yourself into a corner.

I'd like to see these comparisons done in color too... will have to experiment.

Good read either way. Tonal adjustment can be tricky, always good to have as much info as possible!
