I've heard rumours that one of Tony "populism" Blair's acts as prime minister is going to be to give David Beckham a knighthood. Without getting into an argument whether he deserves it ( he doesn't-tell me when he last performed in a competitive international game) I think that a far more appropriate candidate is
Ryan Giggs-look at the facts:
holder of most premership winners medals
captained Wales with dignity and without self-aggrandisement
instrumental in Man United's Treble winning season
scorer of the greatest FA cup goal ever
A loyal servant of one club for his entire professional career and is on course to break Sir Bobby Charlton's appearance record
and most importantly in accomplishing all of the above Giggs has never EVER brought either himself, the sport of football, or the nation into disrepute and therefore is the ideal role model for aspiring young footballers
Does anyone else agree with me? I feel that if men such as Stanley Matthews and Bobby Robson are worthy of their knighthoods, then so is Ryan Giggs
I was going to say that but he's not a member of the Manic Street Preachers! I think he'd appreciate it BUT let's wait a decade or two eh? It's getting silly when people who are paid handsomely for doing what is essentially just their job get a knighthood. If he does loads of charity works and does something for the good of the country then yes, by all means. But let's not rush it, eh? Mind you, I don't care either way 'cos I'm a republican.
