is there a way of doing this that isnt a case of drawing the outline bit by bit onto the render?

i want more of a dashed line outline

I think there is a way by using patterns but I don't know exactly and I have never tried it as well.

One way is to use a pattern..

The other is a lot harder i guess..u take the Pen tool and make a selection similar to the render's figure..then u give "make selection"..You choose the Brush tool u go to the little paper like thing on the top right corner of the bar then u choose 1px brush and play around with "Brush tip shape" until u get the desired dots,then u get back to the Pen tool,make a new layer,the selection still active,then u press right button on the mouse,then go to Stroke,then u choose "Brush" and the "Stimulate Pressure" box should be UNchecked.And that's a way to do it although it's a bit hard
