Yes, I'm sure that we can all 'relate' as we were all, at one time, first-time users too!

Sanby, "watermarking" is a means of putting an image on your image that will "deter" someone from using it, without interfering with the aesthetic properties too terribly much.

It by, no means, is a copyright protection. Also, it's not "foolproof" 'cause there will always be those of us who have both the patience and the skill to simply 'clone' a watermark out...

However, it does serve a purpose insofar as it will prevent the "average surfer" from grabbing your images and using them for their own use. Here's a decent tute on how to apply a custom watermark to your images.
